Our Story - the  history of the International Women's Day Event

2018

This year has seen a shift, the benefits to the community are clear, and the need for more hands on deck were also clear if this benefit was to be delivered. Therefore, the community meeting turned into a dynamic working party which includes Anne Kenyon from Arbonne , Mandy Taylor from Smartline Mortgage Brokers , Jo-Ann Moffat from SOS Removalists and Storage, local wellbeing and life-coach Laura Lloyd from Feed You First and Camilla Hanlon currently studying at university. The evolution of the organisation will no doubt be evident in the execution as the event has grown from a one day event to a week long festival celebrating all that Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai has to offer women. The Rotary Club of Wahroonga have also come on board as our partner to host the event!

The beneficiary of the fundraising across the week and the day also had to evolve to benefit more people therefore an approach was made to The Rotary Club of Wahroonga about a fund for Local Women’s Well-being Projects. As the project spans both Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai and the beneficiaries would also come from both areas, they agreed to support the initiative, the fund and be the accountants for the event! So watch out world, here we come for a 3rd year running – we hope you enjoy embracing what Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai have to offer as much as we have from discovering it! Check out our review in pictures!

2017

This year the event grew to be a fundraising event for two local charities that worked with women - The beneficiaries on the day were StreetWork’s Young Women’s Programs and The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter. Triple H continued to offer the outside broadcast with station manager Rod Thomas and board member Hugh Mulgrew taking the lead in that area. Regular presenters took turns through the day to interview and report from the event.

There were 80% more stalls which included Community groups, businesses which covered three prongs of the space around the waterclock! Lucy had an advisory meeting with a number of community members and then Alison Pearson and Lucy managed the event. We had a raffle, live interviews, stalls that offered experiences and treats, information, special deals for women on the day and so much more. It was a resounding success with yet more to learn!

2016

2016 the focus was on doing an outside broadcast of the Stay in the Loop with Lucy radio show in the local community. Although the Triple H radio footprint is Hornsby Ku-ring-gai, and that footprint was definitely the focus for the event, Lucy was looking for a space that had passing traffic and good reception and the Hornsby Mall with the green area adjacent to the waterclock was ideal for both.

A small but dynamic team from Triple H came together in the planning of the outside broadcast. To make the event a bit more special we also had stalls which included Fernwood who offered demonstration classes on the green as well as a number of incentives to join, Gentle Rhythms who offered free healing treatments, a stall collecting clothes for Dress for Success and a stall selling Tupperware! As you can see, an eclectic mix of businesses and organisations that wanted to be part of the day.

Lucy interviewed women in the community and services about our topic and theme which was Step Up for Gender Equality and addressing the then more silent issue of domestic violence in the area. At the end of it we learnt that Women are interested and want to know more. Triple H community radio were the beneficiaries of any money raised on the day.

2019

We missed a year! Sad but true - all our committee members had other project they needed to focus on for a year and so we had to press the pause button. The Rotary Club of Wahroonga kept the funds we raised safe and they are being used for a nurturing the carers in our community initiative. If you know a carer who you think could benefit from some appreciation and TLC then please contact the Rotary Club of Wahroonga for a nomination form. There are 100 awards to be offered in 2020.
